As a South Korean- American, I feel extremely privileged to not have to go through what all those people are experiencing in North Korea. I was born in the United States and visited South Korea once, which was two years ago. As Mr. Spoor was talking about the borderline between South Korea and North Korea, I remember driving and seeing all the barbed wire fences and stuff. It's visible and clear that the division is taken very seriously in South Korea. However, I didn't exactly know how detrimental and extremely bad the conditions in North Korea were before the movie we saw in class. It's just terrible to know that the people in the North are the same Koreans as the people in the South, but their living conditions are just awfully different by a long mile.
When I was in Seoul, I just couldn't help but notice how the living conditions in South Korea are wonderful and how many people can live with fortunate luxuries in their life. When I heard about the statistics that a child in South Korea would be about 22 pounds heavier and much taller than the same age child in North Korea, it really broke my heart. I was almost in tears when I saw the people praise Kim Jung Il for helping them see again because it clearly showed how brainwashed they were and how their minds have become blinded against the cruelty and impoverished state they lived in.
